Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a Gram-negative, halophilic, curved rod-shaped bacterium that naturally inhabits coastal and estuarine waters (StatPearls, 2023). It is recognized as a major cause of foodborne gastroenteritis worldwide, primarily associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked seafood, particularly oysters (CDC, 2019). The pathogenicity of V. parahaemolyticus is largely attributed to its production of virulence factors such as thermostable direct hemolysin (TDH) and TDH-related hemolysin (TRH), which disrupt host cell membranes and induce fluid secretion in the intestines (PubMed, 2021). While most infections are self-limiting and present as watery diarrhea, the organism can also cause severe necrotizing wound infections and primary septicemia, especially in immunocompromised individuals or those with underlying liver disease (NIH, 2022). Therapeutic intervention typically focuses on oral rehydration, but severe or systemic cases require antibiotics such as doxycycline or ciprofloxacin to inhibit bacterial replication and protein synthesis (StatPearls, 2023).
Antibiotics targeting this organism act by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis (e.g., tetracyclines and macrolides), DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV (e.g., fluoroquinolones), or cell wall synthesis (e.g., cephalosporins) (StatPearls, 2023).
