Viral envelope glycoprotein gp120 (gp120)

Target
gp120
Molecular classification
Viral envelope glycoprotein, Glycoprotein
01

Overview

Viral envelope glycoprotein gp120 is a surface glycoprotein on the HIV envelope that mediates viral entry into host cells. It binds to CD4 receptors and chemokine co-receptors (CCR5 or CXCR4) on host cells, initiating membrane fusion. Its high sequence variability and extensive glycosylation pose significant challenges for vaccine development and antibody-based therapies. It exists in complex with transmembrane protein gp41 in trimeric spikes.
