Overview

The viral envelope of respiratory viruses is a lipid bilayer derived from the host cell membrane that encapsulates the viral genetic material and nucleocapsid (Alberts et al., Molecular Biology of the Cell, 2002). This structure is characteristic of several major respiratory pathogens, including Influenza viruses, Coronaviruses (such as SARS-CoV-2 and MERS-CoV), and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) (NIH, "Viral Structures", 2023). The envelope contains essential viral glycoproteins, such as Hemagglutinin or Spike proteins, which are responsible for binding to host cell receptors and mediating the fusion of viral and cellular membranes (StatPearls, "Virology", 2023). Because the envelope is composed of lipids, it is highly susceptible to chemical and physical disruption by surfactants, alcohols, and specific antiviral agents like Umifenovir, which inhibits the fusion process (PubMed, PMID: 32155618). Targeting the viral envelope is a fundamental strategy for both environmental disinfection and the development of therapeutics aimed at blocking the earliest stages of the viral life cycle (CDC, "Guideline for Disinfection and Sterilization", 2008).
