Viral envelope protein binding refers to the interaction between viral envelope proteins—typically glycoproteins embedded in the lipid bilayer of enveloped viruses—and specific receptors on the surface of host cells. This binding is a critical first step in viral infection, as it determines host specificity (tropism), initiates entry into target cells, and often triggers subsequent membrane fusion events required for viral genome delivery. Because they are exposed on virion surfaces and mediate essential steps of infection, envelope proteins are prime targets for antiviral drugs and neutralizing antibodies. Most vaccines against enveloped viruses work by eliciting antibodies that block these interactions.
