A *viral infected cell* is any host cell that has been invaded by a virus, resulting in the presence of viral genetic material and/or proteins within the cell. These cells act as factories for viral replication and assembly. Their identification and clearance are a central focus of the immune response to viral infection, and also a challenge for antiviral and immunotherapeutic drug development, as the destruction of infected cells may cause tissue damage. Unlike a defined protein, enzyme, or receptor, this is a pathological condition of a cell and not a discrete molecular target[1][3][4][6].
