Viral nonstructural proteins are proteins encoded by the viral genome that are expressed in infected host cells but are not incorporated into the mature virus particle (virion). They primarily function within the host cell to facilitate various stages of viral replication, assembly, and modulation of host responses. These proteins are often enzymatically active and essential for establishing and maintaining infection. Due to their critical roles in the viral life cycle and their absence from host cells, they represent attractive targets for antiviral drug development.
