Viral particle assembly is a critical late phase in the viral life cycle during which all components necessary for forming a mature virion—such as the viral genome, structural proteins, and sometimes host factors—are brought together at specific sites within the host cell to construct an infectious virus particle. This process ensures that newly synthesized viral genomes are efficiently packaged into protective protein shells (capsids), often surrounded by additional layers such as envelopes in enveloped viruses. Targeting this process can prevent the formation of infectious virions, thereby halting viral replication and spread.
