Major mechanisms include direct use of host DNA replication proteins (for DNA viruses), utilization of viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (for RNA viruses), and reverse transcription followed by host genome integration (for retroviruses)[1][2][5][6]. Key steps involve entry into the host cell, genome replication (which varies depending on whether the virus is a DNA virus, RNA virus, or retrovirus), production of viral proteins, assembly, and release. These processes are highly targeted by antivirals, which inhibit critical steps such as polymerase activity, integration, or entry[2][5][6]. Errors in viral replication are common in RNA viruses and lead to high mutational rates, facilitating resistance and adaptation[5]. Viral replication itself is a process, not a single molecular entity, and thus is not considered a therapeutic target in the conventional sense.
