Overview

Viral components encompass the molecular structures and functional elements of a virus, including its genomic material (DNA or RNA), protein capsid, and occasionally a lipid envelope (NCBI, NBK8174). As acellular entities, viruses do not possess the organelles or metabolic machinery found in biological cells, making the phrase 'Viral cell components' a scientific misnomer; viruses are instead obligate intracellular parasites (Wikipedia, Virus). Therapeutic interventions target these components to disrupt the viral life cycle, such as inhibiting viral-encoded enzymes like polymerases, proteases, and integrases (StatPearls, NBK482410). Because viruses rely on host cell processes, a significant challenge in drug development is achieving selectivity to avoid host cell toxicity while overcoming the virus's ability to mutate and develop resistance (PubMed, PMC3500039). These targets are foundational to the treatment of chronic and acute viral infections, ranging from HIV and Hepatitis to Influenza and COVID-19 (NIH, Antiviral drugs).
