Overview

Viral tumor-associated antigens are proteins or glycoproteins of viral origin, expressed in tumor cells as a consequence of infection with oncogenic viruses. These antigens are recognized by the host immune system and may serve as targets for cancer immunotherapies such as vaccines, adoptive T cell therapy, or antibody-based approaches. The actual antigens are highly variable and correspond to specific viral proteins from different viruses (e.g., HPV E6/E7, EBV LMP1), which may contribute to oncogenesis by disrupting host cell cycle regulation, avoiding immune detection, or promoting abnormal cell growth. Because they are often absent from most normal adult tissues, they are promising targets for immunotherapy, but the generic term does not identify a unique molecular entity and should be further specified for structured research or therapeutic targeting[1][5][3][7].
