VP1
Molecular classification
Structural Protein, Capsid Protein

Overview

Virion capsid protein VP1 is the major structural protein of the polyomavirus family and related viruses. It forms the main component of the viral capsid, which is responsible for protecting viral genetic material and mediating initial interactions with host cells during infection. It initiates infection by binding to sialic acids present on cell-surface glycans and is capable of self-organizing into virus-like particles. VP1 also binds directly to microtubules, stabilizing them and potentially affecting host cell cycle progression.
