A virulence factor enzyme is a type of molecule produced by pathogenic microorganisms (such as bacteria, fungi, and some viruses) that contributes to the organism's ability to cause disease in a host. These enzymes are considered "virulence factors" because they enable pathogens to invade host tissues, evade or suppress the immune response, obtain nutrients from the host, and facilitate their own spread within or between hosts. Common examples include: proteases, phospholipases, hyaluronidase, and DNase.
