Overview

Virus-infected cells presenting human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) antigens are host cells that have been infected by HHV-6 and display viral proteins (antigens) on their surface, typically via major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules. These antigens can be recognized by the immune system, particularly T cells, which may target and eliminate the infected cells. HHV-6 primarily infects CD4+ T lymphocytes but can also infect other cell types. Viral proteins are synthesized and presented on MHC class I or II molecules to alert cytotoxic or helper T-cells. HHV-6 infection alters host immune function, especially affecting dendritic cell function. The presence of viral antigens on infected cell surfaces makes these targets recognizable by cytotoxic CD8+ T-cells and helper CD4+ T-cells. This recognition underpins both natural antiviral immunity and potential immunotherapeutic strategies. The main clinical relevance lies in antiviral immunity rather than direct oncogenesis except possibly in rare disorders where unique patterns emerge.
