The virus replication machinery refers to the collection of viral and host cell components that viruses exploit to replicate their genomes, synthesize proteins, assemble new virions, and propagate infection. Viruses lack the full complement of enzymes and structures required for independent replication; therefore, they hijack the molecular machinery of healthy host cells to complete their life cycle. Targeting virus replication machinery in healthy cells can be achieved by directly inhibiting viral enzymes, disrupting critical interactions between viral proteins, modulating host factors required for viral replication, or enhancing intrinsic cellular defense mechanisms such as autophagy.
