Visible light refers to the segment of the electromagnetic spectrum, approximately 380 to 750 nanometers, that is detectable by the human eye. While not a biological molecule or receptor itself, visible light acts as a physical therapeutic modality and environmental stimulus that interacts with specific molecular targets (NIH, 2023). It plays a foundational role in human physiology by activating opsin proteins for vision and melanopsin (OPN4) in the retina to synchronize the master circadian clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (PubMed, PMID: 11834834). Furthermore, bright light therapy is a standard-of-care treatment for seasonal affective disorder (SAD), modulating neurotransmitter systems and melatonin production (Mayo Clinic, 2023). Because it is a physical agent rather than a protein or enzyme, 'Visible light' is typically classified as a medical modality or stimulus rather than a pharmacological target in the traditional sense.
Visible light interacts with specific endogenous chromophores (e.g., melanopsin for circadian regulation) or exogenous photosensitizing agents to induce photochemical reactions, such as the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in photodynamic therapy or the structural isomerization of metabolites like bilirubin.
