Overview

Visual tissue marking" is **not a molecular target** such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or gene product. Instead, it refers to a set of clinical techniques and materials used by surgeons and pathologists to visually identify and delineate tissues during surgery or specimen processing. These methods include the use of dyes (tissue-marking dyes), inks applied with surgical pens for preoperative skin marking, sutures for orientation during excision procedures, and implantable clips for radiographic localization[2][3][4][5]. The primary purpose is to enhance surgical accuracy and safety by providing clear visual references on tissues—either in situ during surgery or on excised specimens for pathological assessment. Tissue-marking dyes are commonly used in pathology labs to ink margins of resected specimens so that pathologists can accurately assess whether tumors have been completely removed; these dyes are formulated for durability through processing but may sometimes lose color fidelity under certain conditions like decalcification[4][5]. Clip markers such as Tumark® Vision are permanent implants placed into soft tissue (e.g., breast) after biopsy or surgery so that sites can be reliably located later using imaging modalities like X-ray; however, they are not suitable for all patients (e.g., those with severe nickel allergy) and carry risks typical of minor implants[1]. In summary, "visual tissue marking" describes procedural aids rather than a biological molecule/receptor. It should not be classified as a therapeutic target.
