Overview

Vitamin A-dependent zinc-binding protein (ZnBP) is an 83 kDa acidic glycoprotein primarily located in the ileal mucosa that is essential for the intestinal absorption of zinc. Its synthesis is strictly regulated by Vitamin A (retinol), which acts as a molecular inducer to ensure adequate levels of the protein are available for zinc transport across the intestinal epithelium. In states of Vitamin A deficiency, the production of ZnBP is significantly reduced, leading to impaired zinc uptake and subsequent secondary zinc deficiency, even when dietary zinc intake is otherwise sufficient. The protein exhibits high binding specificity for zinc ions over other divalent cations such as calcium or copper. This target is a critical component in the synergistic relationship between Vitamin A and zinc, making it a focal point for nutritional interventions and the study of malabsorption syndromes, growth retardation, and immune system maintenance.
