Vitamin A Receptor

Molecular classification
Membrane Transporter, Cell-surface Receptor, Nuclear Receptor, Transcription Factor
01

Overview

The term "Vitamin A receptor" refers to two main types of proteins: STRA6, a cell-surface receptor that mediates retinol uptake, and nuclear retinoic acid receptors (RARs and RXRs), which regulate gene expression in response to retinoic acid. STRA6 facilitates the transport of retinol from retinol-binding protein (RBP) into cells, triggering intracellular signaling pathways. RARs and RXRs act as ligand-activated transcription factors that control the expression of genes involved in development, immunity, and metabolism. Dysregulation of these receptors is implicated in various diseases, including developmental disorders and cancer.

Mechanism of action

STRA6: Mediates cellular retinol uptake and activates intracellular signaling cascades (JAK/STAT). RAR/RXR: Bind to retinoic acid response elements (RAREs) in DNA, regulating transcription of target genes.
