Overview

Pyridoxine is one of the principal forms of vitamin B6, a water-soluble vitamin comprised of six interconvertible vitamers (pyridoxine, pyridoxal, pyridoxamine, and their respective phosphates). Pyridoxine itself functions as a pro-vitamin, requiring metabolic activation to pyridoxal 5′-phosphate, an essential coenzyme for over 140 enzymes, predominantly those involved in amino acid metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, hemoglobin formation, and glycogen breakdown. Pyridoxine is abundant in foods and used therapeutically as a dietary supplement and in the treatment/prevention of vitamin B6 deficiency, as adjunctive therapy for isoniazid-induced neuropathy, and for certain inherited metabolic disorders. It is not itself a therapeutic target (such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter), but rather a nutrient and coenzyme precursor[1][2][3][5][6].
