Vitamin C transporters are membrane proteins responsible for the cellular uptake and distribution of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and its oxidized form, dehydroascorbic acid (DHA). The two main families are Sodium-dependent Vitamin C Transporters (SVCTs) and Facilitative Glucose Transporters (GLUTs). SVCT1 and SVCT2 mediate sodium-coupled co-transport of ascorbate. GLUT1, GLUT3, and GLUT4 transport DHA, which is then reduced to ascorbic acid intracellularly. These transporters are crucial for maintaining intracellular vitamin C levels for its various physiological roles.
