Overview

The Vitamin D3 receptor (VDR), also known as the calcitriol receptor or NR1I1, is a member of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily. It functions as a ligand-dependent transcription factor that mediates the biological effects of vitamin D, particularly its active form, calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3). VDR plays a central role in calcium and phosphate homeostasis and regulates gene expression involved in mineral metabolism, immune response, cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis.
