Vitamin K-dependent protein C (Protein C) is a serine protease that plays a crucial role in regulating blood coagulation. It is synthesized in the liver and requires vitamin K for its post-translational modification and functional activity. Upon activation by thrombin bound to thrombomodulin, it exerts anticoagulant effects primarily by proteolytically inactivating clotting factors Va and VIIIa. Deficiency or dysfunction of Protein C leads to increased risk for venous thrombosis.
