Deficiencies in specific micronutrients can lead to significant clinical pathologies such as iron-deficiency anemia or vitamin D-related bone disorders, while excessive intake can lead to systemic toxicity (NIH, 2023). In a pharmacological context, while micronutrients are frequently used as therapeutic agents (supplements), they are not typically defined as 'targets' themselves; rather, they are ligands or cofactors that modulate the activity of various enzymes and receptors. Many drugs can interfere with the absorption or metabolism of micronutrients, necessitating clinical monitoring of their levels during certain pharmacotherapies (StatPearls, 2023).
