Overview

The vitelline membrane is a specialized extracellular layer that surrounds the oocyte (egg cell) in animals. It provides protection, mediates species-specific sperm recognition during fertilization, and contributes to early embryonic development. After fertilization, it transforms into the fertilization membrane, preventing polyspermy.
