Overview

Vitreomacular adhesion (VMA) is a condition where the vitreous gel (vitreous humor) of the eye adheres abnormally strongly to the macula, which is part of the retina responsible for central vision. Normally, as people age, the vitreous separates from the retina. However, if this separation is incomplete and an adhesion remains at or near the macula, it can create pulling forces on retinal tissue. The adhesion itself may be asymptomatic but can lead to pathological conditions if traction develops.
