VLDLR antisense RNA 1 (VLDLR-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the antisense strand of the VLDLR gene on chromosome 8q22.3[5][3]. It does not encode a protein but regulates the expression of genes related to lipid metabolism, neural development, and immune processes[3]. VLDLR-AS1 is expressed in several tissues, including the brain, and has been implicated in various pathologies such as cancer, metabolic disorders, and neurological diseases[3][2]. Specifically, serum levels of VLDLR-AS1 have been suggested as a biomarker for repetitive mild traumatic brain injury, with lower levels found in affected individuals[2]. It may also play roles in cellular viability and the cell cycle, as well as in cellular stress responses in cancers such as hepatocellular carcinoma and ovarian cancer, but it is not a classical therapeutic target like a receptor, enzyme, or transporter[1][2][3]. No drugs are currently known to interact directly with VLDLR-AS1 or modulate its function for therapeutic purposes[5].
