Vocal fold tissue refers to a pair of multilayered, wedge-shaped structures located in the larynx (voice box), composed of three main layers: an epithelial surface, a lamina propria (with superficial, intermediate, and deep layers rich in extracellular matrix), and an underlying vocalis muscle[1][2][5]. The tissue's extracellular matrix contains collagen, elastin, fibronectin, and proteoglycans, which together provide the viscoelastic properties essential for vibration and sound production[2][5]. The biological function of vocal fold tissue includes generation of sound (phonation), airway protection, and regulating airflow. Common diseases affecting this tissue include vocal fold scarring (fibrosis), nodules, polyps, paralysis, and cancer. "Vocal fold tissue" is not considered a therapeutic target in the molecular sense, but rather the site or substrate on which disease, injury, and therapy act[2][5]. In summary, "Vocal fold tissue" does not conform to the definition of a target molecule or receptor. It is an anatomical structure, not a protein, receptor, or gene, and is therefore not used as a canonical therapeutic or biomarker target in drug discovery or molecular pharmacology[1][2][5].
