Overview

A volatile organic compound (VOC) is any organic (carbon-based) chemical compound that readily evaporates and exists as a gas at normal atmospheric temperatures and pressures. VOCs are a heterogeneous class, including both natural (e.g., terpenes, plant volatiles) and synthetic chemicals (e.g., solvents, fuels, by-products of industrial processes). They are important in ecology as mediators of interspecies communication, defense, and adaptation in plants and fungi, as well as contributors to air pollution, human health hazards (e.g., respiratory and neurological diseases), and environmental regulation. VOCs do not represent a single defined target for therapeutic drugs, but their biological profiles can serve as biomarkers for disease diagnosis and environmental monitoring, especially when analyzed in exhaled breath.
