Overview

Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) are a group of malodorous gases, primarily hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulfide, produced in the oral cavity through the anaerobic bacterial degradation of sulfur-containing amino acids (StatPearls, 2023). These compounds are the primary causative agents of intra-oral halitosis and are frequently associated with periodontal conditions such as gingivitis and periodontitis (PubMed, 2020). Although VSCs are metabolic byproducts rather than traditional protein targets like receptors or enzymes, they are the focus of therapeutic interventions in oral health. Treatment strategies typically involve chemical neutralization using metal ions like zinc, which form insoluble sulfides, or the use of oxidizing agents like chlorine dioxide to convert volatile thiols into non-odorous forms (NIH, 2021). Additionally, antimicrobial agents are used to reduce the population of VSC-producing bacteria on the tongue and in periodontal pockets. Monitoring VSC levels via gas chromatography or electrochemical sensors serves as a key biomarker for assessing the efficacy of oral malodor treatments (Journal of Breath Research, 2018).
