Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), including hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulfide, are the primary chemical agents responsible for oral malodor, or halitosis (Source: StatPearls). These compounds are produced by the anaerobic degradation of sulfur-containing amino acids by Gram-negative bacteria residing in the oral cavity, particularly on the tongue and within periodontal pockets (Source: PubMed). Therapeutic interventions do not target a single human receptor but rather focus on the chemical neutralization of VSCs using metal ions like zinc or the reduction of the causative microbial population using antiseptics like chlorhexidine (Source: PubChem). While these substances are the focus of many oral hygiene products, they represent a heterogeneous group of metabolic byproducts and bacterial structures rather than a specific molecular therapeutic target.
