Overview

Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), including hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulfide, are the primary chemical constituents responsible for oral malodor, or halitosis (PubMed: 22550150). These compounds are generated in the oral cavity through the anaerobic bacterial degradation of sulfur-containing amino acid precursors, such as L-cysteine and L-methionine, which are found in saliva and food debris (PubMed: 15127867). While VSCs are metabolic byproducts rather than traditional biological targets like receptors or enzymes, they are the central focus of halitosis management. Therapeutic interventions typically employ metal ions, particularly zinc, which chemically neutralize VSCs by forming stable, non-volatile metal sulfides (PubMed: 14711439). Additionally, antimicrobial agents like chlorhexidine or cetylpyridinium chloride are used to reduce the population of Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria that produce these compounds (PubMed: 18434000). Beyond their role in malodor, VSCs are implicated in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease by increasing mucosal permeability and promoting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (PubMed: 12617606).
