Overview

Voltage dependent anion channel 1 pseudogene 6 is a human pseudogene related to the VDAC1 gene family, which encodes for proteins in the outer mitochondrial membrane involved in metabolite and ion exchange[1][3]. However, as a pseudogene, VDAC1P6 does not encode a functional protein and is not known to have a physiological or pharmacological function. Pseudogenes can arise through gene duplication or retrotransposition after which they accumulate mutations that prevent them from producing active protein products. There is currently no evidence VDAC1P6 acts as a therapeutic target, is involved in disease, or serves as a biomarker. VDAC1P6 should not be confused with the protein-coding VDAC1 gene, which encodes the functional voltage-dependent anion channel 1 protein involved in mitochondrial metabolism and apoptosis[1][3].
