Overview

Voltage dependent anion channel 1 pseudogene 8 (VDAC1P8) is one of multiple human pseudogenes derived from the gene encoding voltage-dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1), a mitochondrial ion channel involved in cellular metabolism and apoptosis. Unlike its parental gene, VDAC1P8 typically does not encode a functional protein. Recent research demonstrates that VDAC1P8 is transcribed in specific tissues, particularly showing high expression in acute myeloid leukemia where its overexpression is correlated with reduced VDAC1 levels, suggesting a regulatory role through a noncoding RNA mechanism. VDAC1P8 is thus a member of the growing class of pseudogenes with putative roles in gene regulation, especially in cancer biology[4][5].

Mechanism of action

None known for drugs; VDAC1P8 may act by modulating RNA networks as a ceRNA, but there is no direct mechanism of action relevant to therapies[4][5].

03

Biological functions

Competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) functionRegulation of parental gene (VDAC1) expressionAssociation with gene regulatory networks in acute myeloid leukemia (AML)[4][5]
04

Disease associations

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML): VDAC1P8 is specifically overexpressed in AML and exhibits a regulatory relationship with parental VDAC1 gene expression[4][5].
05

Biomarkers

Overexpression of VDAC1P8 in AML cellular models may serve as a biomarker for disease presence or for the downregulation of the parental VDAC1 gene in AML[4][5].
