Overview

The voltage-dependent anion channel 2 pseudogene is a DNA sequence resembling the functional VDAC2 gene but is typically not transcribed into a functional protein and is generally classified as noncoding. While VDAC2 is an essential outer mitochondrial membrane protein involved in ion transport, metabolism, and apoptosis[1][3], its pseudogenes—such as those annotated on chromosomes 1, 2, 12, and 21—do not produce active proteins and lack established roles in physiology or disease. Current evidence indicates that VDAC2 pseudogenes are not expressed at biologically relevant levels[8]. Unlike some other pseudogenes that can regulate functional gene expression via RNA-based mechanisms (e.g., acting as competing endogenous RNAs, or ceRNAs), there is no well-characterized role or therapeutic relevance attributed to VDAC2 pseudogenes.
