Target intelligence / Profile preview
The voltage-dependent calcium channel subunit alpha-1 is the principal pore-forming component of voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs). It mediates calcium influx into cells upon membrane depolarization, triggering downstream processes such as neurotransmitter release, muscle contraction, and hormone secretion. There are multiple isoforms (L-, P/Q-, N-, R-, T-types) with distinct tissue distribution and physiological roles. Mutations or dysregulation can cause various diseases, including cardiac arrhythmias, epilepsy, and ataxia.
