The voltage-dependent sodium channel alpha subunit is a large transmembrane protein forming the core pore through which sodium ions flow during electrical signaling events. Its modular architecture underlies both its function—rapidly activating/inactivating upon changes in membrane potential—and its role as a target for genetic mutations leading to neurological or muscular disorders. It operates independently but exhibits altered properties when associated with auxiliary beta subunits or targeted pharmacologically.
