The voltage-gated calcium channel protein subunit alpha1A, encoded by the CACNA1A gene, is the principal pore-forming component of P/Q-type voltage-dependent calcium channels. These channels are predominantly expressed in neurons and play a critical role in mediating calcium influx upon membrane depolarization. Mutations or dysfunctions in CACNA1A are linked to several neurological disorders including familial hemiplegic migraine type 1 (FHM1), episodic ataxia type 2 (EA2), spinocerebellar ataxia type 6 (SCA6), epilepsy syndromes, among others.
