Voltage-gated chloride channels (ClC channels) are a family of transmembrane proteins that selectively conduct chloride ions (Cl⁻) across cellular membranes in response to changes in membrane potential. These channels play essential roles in maintaining cell resting membrane potential, regulating cell volume, controlling pH, and facilitating the transport of organic solutes. They are also involved in processes such as electrical excitability, ion homeostasis, cell migration, proliferation, and differentiation. Mutations or dysregulation of these proteins can lead to diseases including myotonia congenita, epilepsy, kidney disorders, and primary aldosteronism.
