Voltage-Gated Chloride Channel Protein (Glioma-Specific) (ClC)

ClC
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Voltage-gated ion channel, Chloride channel, ClC superfamily
01

Overview

Voltage-gated chloride channels (ClC family) are integral membrane proteins that facilitate the selective passage of chloride ions across cellular membranes in response to changes in membrane potential. In gliomas, particularly malignant forms, these channels—most notably ClC-2 and ClC-3—are upregulated and play a critical role in tumor cell physiology. They mediate cell volume regulation, rapid changes in cell size/shape during division or migration, and enhance invasive migration. Their upregulation correlates with higher glioma grade and poorer patient survival, making them attractive targets for therapeutic intervention.
