The voltage-gated N-type calcium channel alpha-1B subunit (Cav2.2) is a high-voltage activated calcium channel predominantly expressed in neuronal tissues. It plays a critical role in neurotransmitter release and pain pathways by mediating calcium influx into nerve terminals upon membrane depolarization. It is composed of the pore-forming α1B subunit along with auxiliary subunits α2δ and β. Cav2.2 is a major target for analgesics used in severe neuropathic pain conditions.
