Overview

Voltage-gated potassium channel subfamily C member 3 (KCNC3 / Kv3.3) is a protein that forms part of the voltage-gated potassium channels, crucial for regulating the electrical excitability of cells by allowing selective passage of potassium ions across cell membranes in response to changes in membrane potential. Kv3.3 is particularly important for enabling rapid repolarization of action potentials in neurons, allowing neurons—especially cerebellar Purkinje cells—to fire at high frequencies. Mutations or dysfunctions in KCNC3 have been associated with neurological disorders such as spinocerebellar ataxia type 13 (SCA13).
