Overview

Potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily A regulatory beta subunit 2 (KCNAB2) encodes Kvβ2, an auxiliary cytoplasmic subunit that associates with voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channel alpha subunits, particularly of the KCNA (Kv1/Shaker) family. Kvβ2 regulates channel gating kinetics, increases surface expression of Kv1 channels, and promotes inactivation and closure of channel complexes, helping to prevent neuronal hyperexcitability. KCNAB2 is part of both the ion channel and aldo-keto reductase families, reflecting enzymatic activity as well as its key role in ion channel modulation. Alterations in KCNAB2 expression or function are implicated in various diseases, including epilepsy, cardiac arrhythmias, lung cancer, and syndromes involving cognitive deficits or developmental delays.
