The voltage-gated sodium channel protein type 4 subunit alpha is a pore-forming transmembrane glycoprotein that constitutes the main functional component of the Nav1.4 sodium channels in skeletal muscle. It mediates rapid influx of Na⁺ ions into muscle cells during action potentials, which is essential for initiating and propagating electrical signals required for muscle contraction and relaxation. Mutations in SCN4A are linked to several neuromuscular disorders including periodic paralyses and myotonias.
