Overview

The voltage-gated sodium channel protein type 5 subunit alpha (NaV1.5) is a pore-forming subunit of the cardiac sodium channel, encoded by the SCN5A gene. Primarily expressed in cardiac muscle cells, it plays a critical role in generating and propagating electrical signals necessary for normal heart rhythm by mediating the fast influx of sodium ions during phase 0 of the cardiac action potential. Mutations in SCN5A are associated with various inherited arrhythmia syndromes.
