Target intelligence / Profile preview

Voltage-gated sodium channel protein type 9 subunit alpha (NaV1.7)

Target
NaV1.7
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Voltage-gated ion channel, Sodium channel
01

Overview

The voltage-gated sodium channel protein type 9 subunit alpha (NaV1.7) is the pore-forming α subunit of the NaV1.7 channel, encoded by the SCN9A gene. It plays a critical role in generating and conducting action potentials in excitable cells, especially neurons involved in pain sensation (nociceptors). Mutations in SCN9A are linked to several human disorders, including paroxysmal extreme pain disorder, congenital insensitivity to pain, and anosmia.
