Target intelligence / Profile preview

Voltage-gated sodium channel protein type IX alpha subunit (NaV1.7 alpha subunit)

Target
NaV1.7 alpha subunit
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Voltage-gated ion channel, Sodium channel
01

Overview

The voltage-gated sodium channel protein type IX alpha subunit (NaV1.7) is the pore-forming component of the NaV1.7 channel, a voltage-gated sodium channel critical for generating and conducting action potentials in excitable cells, especially nociceptors. Mutations in SCN9A, the gene encoding NaV1.7, can cause a range of pain disorders or congenital insensitivity to pain. Selective NaV1.7 blockers are being developed as analgesics.
