Voltage-gated sodium channel subtype Nav1.7 (Nav1.7)

Target
Nav1.7
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Voltage-gated sodium channel
01

Overview

Nav1.7 is a voltage-gated sodium channel subtype encoded by the SCN9A gene, playing a crucial role in pain sensation. It amplifies small depolarizations in nociceptors, setting the excitability threshold for action potentials. Mutations can cause congenital insensitivity to pain or inherited pain syndromes. It is a target for novel analgesics due to its role in neuropathic and inflammatory pain, and is also implicated in certain cancers due to its role in increasing cell migration and invasion.
