Overview

VN1R13P (Vomeronasal 1 receptor 13 pseudogene) is a human pseudogene belonging to the vomeronasal 1 receptor (V1R) gene family, which, in other mammals, encodes G protein-coupled receptors responsible for pheromone detection via the vomeronasal organ. However, in humans, VN1R13P is non-functional and does not produce a protein. This is typical for most members of the V1R family in humans, which have lost their function during primate evolution[6][7][1][3][9]. VN1R13P is thought to be the relic of an evolutionary contraction in the vomeronasal receptor gene family, reflecting the vestigial nature of the vomeronasal system in humans[7].
