Overview

Vomeronasal 1 receptor 74 pseudogene (VN1R74P) is a human gene that encodes a non-functional, or pseudogene, member of the vomeronasal 1 receptor (V1R) gene family. The V1R gene family encodes G protein-coupled receptors principally involved in pheromone detection in the vomeronasal organ of many mammals. In humans and other primates, the majority of V1R genes (including VN1R74P) have become pseudogenized, losing their protein-coding potential and their role in sensory perception, reflecting the evolutionary reduction and near loss of vomeronasal organ function in primates. As a pseudogene, VN1R74P does not encode an active receptor and is not considered a functional molecular target or implicated in therapeutic strategies. Key points: - VN1R74P is a nonfunctional remnant of an olfactory GPCR receptor gene class specific to the mammalian vomeronasal system. - It is not a receptor, enzyme, or transporter in a functional sense and thus not a therapeutic target. - No disease associations, known drug interactions, biomarker status, or clinical significance have been described for this pseudogene in available authoritative genetic databases or literature.
