Vomeronasal 1 receptor 88 pseudogene (VN1R88P) is an unprocessed pseudogene found in humans, genomically located at 19p12 (chromosome 19:22861303-22861594). The gene is a member of the vomeronasal 1 receptor family by inheritance of sequence but does not encode a functional receptor protein. "Pseudogene" indicates that although it is similar in DNA sequence to the gene for Vomeronasal 1 receptor 88, it contains mutations or deletions that prevent it from producing a functioning protein. There is no established role for VN1R88P in cell biology, disease, or as a therapeutic target, nor is there evidence for involvement in signal transduction or protein-coding processes. Expression may occur in human tissues, such as the testis, but its biological significance is unclear. As such, VN1R88P represents a non-functional relic of gene duplication or mutation events in primate evolution.
